This week’s Faces of Four interview highlights Cassandra Garcia, current President of Genentech Toastmasters and Chair of the upcoming Toastmasters Leadership Institute scheduled for August 13th at the Genentech campus in South San Francisco. Let’s take a moment to get to know Cassandra.
Tell us a little about your Toastmasters career (e.g. How long have you been with the organization, what clubs do you belong to, what made you join, etc.).
I have been with Genentech Toastmasters since November of 2013. I did a presentation to my department regarding Zelboraf, which is the molecule that I support. After the presentation I received positive feed back however, I felt very nervous presenting in front of the large crowd. The VPM of Genentech Toastmasters was in our department at the time and she encouraged me to attend Toastmasters as a guest and soon became a member. I was provided a mentor that motivated me and inspired me to get started with my CC’s and so I did. I became VPM in 2014, I won Genentech Toastmaster of the year for 2015 and now I am the President of our club. I will complete my ACB and ALB by this year.
How has Toastmasters helped you in your professional career?
I have grown and learned so much with my Toastmasters club, I can now speak in large settings at work and in personal settings with no fear and skills that help me get my point across with professionalism.
What is the best public speaking advice you’ve ever received?
That I have grown so much and to keep it up! It always motivates me to hear that and to continue on to receive my DTM and hopefully I can inspire people to do the same along the way.
What has surprised you the most about yourself since you joined Toastmasters?
How many wonderful people I have met and friendships that I’ve made to last a lifetime. I have heard stories that have truly inspired me and will forever stay with me.
What are your interests and hobbies outside of Toastmasters?
I love to spend time with my family, shop, watch sports, do yoga and enjoy nature!
How would you describe the perfect meal?
Healthy and delicious!
What is a fun fact most people don’t know about you?
I love to do aqua aerobics!
