Memories From My First Fall Conference

I remember my first District 4 conference back in the fall of 2014. I was fortunate enough to have advanced all the way to the final round of the Humorous Speech contest. I was ready, and terrified, to take on the best of the best on the District’s biggest stage.

The conference was held in Monterey that year. As I made my way into the hotel the morning of, I was almost awe struck by the energy in the room. There were so many Toastmasters gathered together at the venue, so many individuals with different backgrounds and levels of experience. It was truly amazing to see all of the talent gathered in the room.

As we continued throughout the day, I actually stopped thinking about the speech competition and began taking in the all of the unexpected surprises that the conference had to offer. The keynote speaker that year rocked the stage and left me with many takeaways. The educational sessions gave me extremely helpful insights on how to improve the quality of my club and advance my own personal development.

The business meeting was also memorable. Yes, I said that. I remember hearing for the first time the proposal to reform the then District 4 into two districts. It was a heavy topic that I was not expecting to be addressing in the meeting but at the same time was honored to be a part of the decision making process.

Finally, the day went by and I finally arrived at the big moment, the Humorous Speech contest. This one was for all the marbles. My nerves definitely started to kick in but all of the good energy and insights from the day helped me deliver the best performance I could deliver at that time.

Tomorrow, the District 4 Fall conference returns and the synchronicity begins. This new conference brings a new keynote speaker, new educational sessions, new topics to address in the business meeting, new speech contestants, and more.
